Product Description ■
[1/43 #08021 Skoda 979-II (CZ, 1957)]
In 1955, the Ministry of Automobile Industry of the Socialist Republic of Czechoslovakia licensed the manufacture of a commercial vehicle that meets the requirements of spaciousness, light weight and modernity.
In addition, the minibus was required to appeal to Western buyers because the foreign currency generated by the export would benefit the state coffers of the Republic of Czechoslovakia.
Other conditions from the government included a self-supporting steel body, a load capacity of 950 kg, a maximum speed of almost 100 km per hour, and a gasoline consumption of less than 10 liters per 100 km.
The first Skoda test vehicle with these important values was born and given the model name S 979.
The van was designed and developed and fitted with wheels since March 1956.
After only six months, the prototype was completed and road testing began.
The improved version with a slight change in appearance was soon road tested and internally named Prototype 979-II.
The rear was still a two row bench seat and the engine was installed between the driver and passenger seats, but most of all, the government agency did not reach a prompt decision.
The first bus 1203 was finally shipped in November 1968.
