Biography
Iwanami Bunko / Shusui Kotoku (1871-1911), who died an extraordinary death in the Taigyaku Incident, studied under Chomin Nakae (1847-1901), a leader of the thought of freedom and people's rights in the Meiji period, from his youth at the age of 18 until the end of Chomin. Chomin's memoir by Shusui reveals the formation of the thinker Chosui himself. It is a document of modern Japanese thought and a masterpiece of Meiji literature.
