Product Description ■
[About Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido]
In the Edo period, the Tokugawa Shogunate tried to unify the country, the Tokaido Road was one of the five roads that connected 492 km from Nihombashi in Tokyo to Sanjo Ohashi in Kyoto.
Fifty three inns were built, and travelers and goods were sent to them. The ukiyo-e by Hiroshige II that depicted the scenery of this road was famous and often featured as a subject of waka and haiku.
[About Seki-shuku]
Seki-shuku is the 47th inn town on the Tokaido Road, corresponding to Sekimachi, Kameyama City, Mie Prefecture. It is a transportation hub from ancient times and is also a place at the entrance of the Isebetsu-kaido road leading to Ise Kaido Road, which is used by people who visit Ise-jingu Shrine from the Kansai area.
Seki-shuku is the only place where the historical townscape remains and is selected as a preservation districts for groups of traditional buildings. There are more than 200 traditional townhouses that still exist today, and it stretches about 1.8 km from Oiwake in the east to Oiwake in the west.
The ukiyo-e by Hiroshige II depicts the headquarters of the Daimyo Procession being built early in the morning in the early dark.
