[Comments on CD trial listening]
Right after Ashkenazi moved to the "West", Rachmaninoff played with Moscow Philharmonic, who was visiting Britain, in a recording in 1963. This is by far the best. The orchestra is rough and yet thick and emotional, and also has a rich solo. On the other hand, Tchaikovsky feels that Mathel's intentions are not in sync with the solo.
